Chinese Famille Rose plate with tobacco leaves

This Chinese export porcelain plate is decorated in a large selection of colored enamels. Depicted is a group of tobacco leaves in red, black and gold, which is surrounded by various flowers in the Famille Rose palette. The rim is decorated with four cartouches, displaying fruits and flowers. These cartouches are reserved on an unusual sepia trellis-diaper pattern band. The decoration is executed in fine detail and is typical for first half of the 18th century. The diameter of the plate is just over 9 inches (23 cm).

Virtually perfect, with one tiny 0.1-inch frit to the reverse rim.

Qianlong, circa 1740.
