Chinese Famille Rose plate with peonies

The central decoration of this plate consists of a flower group with peonies and a butterfly in the Famille Rose palette. This decoration is surrounded along the rounded well by four peony cartouches reserved on an iron red ornamental band. The rim is decorated with two lotus groups and two peony groups, complementing the central decoration. The quality and composition of the decoration are quite exceptional. The thick and opaque enamels used are typical for the reign of the Chinese emperor Yongzheng (1723-1735). The green "Famille Verte" enamels even display some halo effect, which is typical for the earlier Kangxi period. This confirms that this plate belongs to the earliest examples of Chinese export porcelain in the Famille Rose style.  The diameter of the plate is almost 9 inches (22.5 cm).

Excellent, with three chips (largest 0.25-inch, others smaller) as well as some fritting to the rim.

Yongzheng, circa 1730.
